Southwick was the third president of Emerson College, serving from
1908 through 1932. When he became president in 1908, it was the culmination of a long association with
the College that began when he enrolled as a student in 1885. In addition to serving as a member of the
faculty and Dean of the College, Southwick also briefly pursued a career as an actor. Henry Southwick
was the individual most responsible for introducing the study of acting and stagecraft into the Emerson
