President John C. Zacharis, 1936-1992

John Zacharis was the 10th president of Emerson College. Like Presidents Southwick, Ross and Rolfe before him, John Zacharis assumed the presidency of Emerson College with the benefit of a long prior association with the institution. Zacharis was a student, a faculty member, a department chair, the Academic Dean and the Senior Vice President prior to becoming President in 1990. In a period of just two short years, President Zacharis restored unity to a campus divided over the prospect of the move and, with the purchase of 180 Tremont Street, laid the groundwork for the Campus on the Common.
